UAE citizens and residents are reaping the rewards of switching from petrol-powered cars to electric vehicles (EVs), with many saying they have been able to save more each month since going green.

Driven by economic considerations, convenience, and rising environmental awareness, EVs - once seen as a niche or futuristic option - are steadily becoming part of everyday life in the country.

EV vehicle sales showed strong growth in 2025. Classifieds platform dubizzle reported a 41% year-on-year increase in used EV listings, indicating growing buyer confidence.

PwC’s eMobility Outlook 2024 also points to steady growth, forecasting that electric vehicles will account for more than 15% of new car sales in the UAE by 2030.

Emirati EV owner Saleh Al Darmaki said public perception has evolved alongside market growth, noting a clear rise in demand for electric vehicles in recent years.

"There are more EVs on the road than ever before, charging stations are proliferating, and owning and relying on an EV without worrying about infrastructure or range is becoming simpler," Al Darmaki told Aletihad.

He said the pace of adoption has been particularly striking. He recalled that early concerns about long-term performance, quality, and reliability had initially made some buyers hesitant, but these perceptions have shifted as more people began driving EVs.

"These days, a lot of these cars have great performance, contemporary amenities, and outstanding quality at affordable costs. One of the main reasons they're growing so popular is its value for money," he said.

Another EV owner, Ashwaq Abdullah said it has been a relief that he no longer has to keep checking the prices of fuel. "My monthly expenses have significantly decreased since I started driving an electric car," he told Aletihad.

The convenience of owning an EV has also boosted its appeal. Vehicles can be charged at home using installed chargers or at stations across the city, including those located in offices, shopping malls, commercial centres, and public parking areas. Residents said this growing accessibility has accelerated adoption and strengthened consumer confidence.

"What I like most is not having to wait at fuel stations," said Osha Ali. "I save so much time and effort because I can charge my car at home or at work."
Others say that while the upfront cost of electric vehicles can be higher than conventional cars, the savings on fuel and maintenance help offset the initial investment over time.

"Electric cars have become a smart long-term investment," said another resident, Eisa Mohamad, adding that their environmental benefits could also contribute to long-term gains for the planet.

Al Darmaki echoed the practical advantages of EV ownership, including lower operating costs, reduced maintenance, and overall convenience.

He further highlighted that government support has made it easier for many motorists to go for the eco-friendly swap.

"There is a strong basis for EV adoption thanks to government programmes, infrastructure development, and long-term electrification objectives," he said. "Overall, the UAE's EV market is expanding steadily and healthily, giving the impression that this change is organic and backed by actual experience and value."
