Securing a leading position in one of the most dynamic diplomatic domains reshaping international relations has long been a strategic priority for TRENDS.
We recognised early on that tech diplomacy is deeply intertwined with the United Arab Emirates’ strong commitment to advancing the technology sector in all its dimensions.
This form of diplomacy builds vital bridges between policy and technological innovation, linking national strategies to the realities of emerging tech ecosystems.
Guided by this vision, we recently convened the 2nd Annual Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence in Abu Dhabi under the theme “Tech Diplomacy in the MENA Region.”
The event was organised in partnership with the UAE Cyber Security Council and featured leading global think tanks, alongside companies such as Google, OpenAI, and major academic institutions, including Khalifa University, MBZUAI, and NYU Abu Dhabi.
The dialogue brought together leading technology players and world-class universities to explore the growing influence of technology in reshaping diplomacy, strategic alliances, and investment trends across the Middle East and North Africa.
These discussions helped illuminate the evolving intersections between technology, politics, and economics at a time when technology has become a driver of future international relations and one of the most powerful instruments of modern soft power, given its deep and expanding impact across all dimensions of national and societal strength.
The forum’s sessions offered rich insights, examining the technological dimension of US-Gulf relations, the geopolitical implications of artificial intelligence, and the ways advanced technologies may influence regional stability, cybersecurity, and digital sovereignty.
They also addressed how AI and digital infrastructure are redefining soft power by enabling new forms of diplomatic engagement and cross-border cooperation.
Naturally, such discussions did not focus solely on opportunities; they also addressed the complex challenges that accompany this rapidly evolving sector, from data protection and AI governance to the implications of advanced technologies for future labour markets.
Developing a deep understanding of these shifts requires sustained dialogue, policy analysis, and the exchange of ideas and expertise within the framework of active and long-term international cooperation, ultimately paving the way for a comprehensive AI governance model built on protection, innovation, and partnership.
The future of artificial intelligence holds immense developmental promise, and every step we take in advancing tech diplomacy enhances the UAE’s pioneering role in both the cyber and technology domains.
It also supports what several participants described as a defining moment for the region, where technology, and AI in particular, lies at the heart of economic diversification strategies.
As technology becomes a tool of influence and development, it further strengthens the UAE’s balanced and forward-looking model in the field of artificial intelligence, which combines sovereign capabilities with strong global partnerships.
There is no doubt that the rapid evolution of AI is creating both risks and opportunities at an equally fast pace.
The expanding global influence of transnational tech platforms, capable of transcending geography, identity, and state sovereignty, offers a useful lens for understanding why dialogue is essential in a world where international relations are increasingly shaped by emerging digital trends.
Artificial intelligence, the digital economy, data governance, and e-commerce have all become core factors in global politics.
For this reason, TRENDS remains committed to its vital role in understanding future transformations, anticipating risks and opportunities, and generating insights that help shape strategic plans and policies, supporting sustainable development in the UAE, the region, and the wider world.
