A jury in the US state of Texas on Friday ordered South Korean tech giant Samsung to pay approximately $445.5 million for patent infringement.

The ruling in favour of the plaintiff, New Hampshire-based company Collision Communications, is a first-instance decision. Jury awards are sometimes reduced on appeal.

According to Collision, Samsung's smartphones, tablets, laptops, refrigerators, washing machines, and other household appliances infringe the patents across the board. Collision's list of devices allegedly in breach takes up more than 15 pages in the lawsuit.

The four patents relate to technologies for reducing signal interference in network communications.

Samsung argued that the patents were invalid, but failed to convince the Texas jury, which awarded Collision $445,494,160. The jury also concluded that Samsung had deliberately infringed the patents, which could lead to a higher payment.

In December 2023, Collision took the world's largest PC manufacturer, Lenovo, to court at the same time as Samsung. That patent dispute was settled at the end of September.
