ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)

The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has introduced the region's first national regulation for the certification of air navigation service providers for unmanned aircraft, known as CAR Airspace Part Uspace.

This regulation reflects the UAE's unwavering commitment to innovation and technological progress, aligning with the country's strategic vision and forward-thinking leadership.

It marks a pivotal milestone in advancing drone technology and fostering sustainable global investments, reinforcing the UAE's position as a leader in the future of aviation.

This regulation sets a comprehensive framework for organisations seeking to provide air navigation services for drones, ensuring they meet strict operational and safety requirements. By establishing a well-defined regulatory environment, the UAE is creating the foundation for safe, efficient, and seamlessly integrated drone operations within its airspace.

Designed with a holistic approach, the new regulation covers every critical aspect of certifying drone air navigation service provider, including contracting, training, quality assurance, safety, future planning, auditing, and certification. The goal is to seamlessly integrate drone operations into the existing aviation ecosystem, ensuring a cohesive, efficient, and safe airspace through licensed entities that provide specialized air navigation services for drones.

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA, emphasised the significance of this milestone, stating: "The introduction of the region's first national regulation for certifying drone air navigation service providers represents a transformative step in keeping pace with technological advancements and driving sustainable global investments in this sector. This regulation is not just about compliance; it is a testament to our commitment to safety, efficiency, and innovation in aviation. As drone operations are set to double in the near future, this proactive regulatory framework will serve as a model for seamless drone-commercial aviation integration, further cementing the UAE's position as a regional leader in the aviation industry."

Aqeel Ahmed Al Zarouni, Assistant Director General - Aviation Safety Affairs, added: "This regulation is a cornerstone of our strategy to safely integrate advanced drone technologies into our airspace. By establishing clear standards for certification, we are ensuring that all providers operate with the highest level of safety and professionalism. This initiative will not only support the growth of the drone industry but also enhance the overall safety and efficiency of our national airspace, making the UAE a regional benchmark for innovative and responsible aviation practices."

With the rapid evolution of drone technology, airspace demand for unmanned aircraft is increasing at an unprecedented pace. In the coming years, the number of drone operations across the UAE is expected to double, driven by technological advancements and a growing reliance on autonomous aerial systems.
