Abu Dhabi’s ambition to pioneer smart and zero-carbon mobility took a significant leap forward with NIO, a leading electric vehicle manufacturer, setting up its MENA headquarters in the emirate.

The company’s expansion into the region is bolstered by a partnership with CYVN Holdings, an Abu Dhabi-based growth equity investor focused on driving innovation in the future of mobility.

William Li, Founder, Chairman and CEO of NIO, in an exclusive interview with Aletihad, outlined the company’s ambitious plans for expansion in the MENA region and beyond. He highlighted the pivotal role of NIO’s partnership with CYVN Holdings.

Often referred to as the "Elon Musk of China”,  Li built his reputation through a series of successful Internet ventures before achieving remarkable success with NIO. Renowned for his persuasive ability, Li has consistently attracted influential investors to support his visionary projects.

In the presence of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, both the companies launched NIO MENA in Cairo on October 4. This had given a solid start to NIO in the region.

Li confirmed that CYVN Holdings has acquired 20% stake in the NYSE-listed NIO and invested over $3 billion. The Abu Dhabi-based company will serve as a strategic partner in driving NIO’s regional and global expansion, Li added.

NIO has established a strong foothold in the Chinese market with its premium electric vehicles. "NIO holds over 40% market share in the premium battery-electric vehicle segment, with monthly sales consistently surpassing 20,000 units," said Li.

As Abu Dhabi continues to establish itself as a hub for artificial intelligence, NIO’s entry is expected to boost research into autonomous and smart mobility solutions. “Central to our regional vision is the development of a specialised R&D centre dedicated to AI and autonomous driving technologies. Our team is already coming together to drive this initiative forward,” Li explained.  “We are confident that within five years, NIO will emerge as a key player in the UAE market, defining benchmarks in premium electric mobility.”

NIO has established a distinct identity for itself in the smart mobility sector. When asked about its differentiation from competitors like Tesla and BYD, Li remarked: “Tesla is an impressive company, and BYD has its strengths with a diverse range of powertrain systems, including battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models.” However, he emphasised:
“NIO’s approach is unique. We focus exclusively on battery-electric vehicles, and one of our standout innovations is our swap station technology.”

Detailing the innovation behind battery-swap technology, NIO’s founder stated: “Our swappable batteries provide a swift alternative to traditional charging, enabling a complete power swap in just three minutes. The process is smooth and fully automated—just press a button, remain seated, and your car reverses into the station, completing the swap in two and a half minutes.”

NIO operates a network of 2,700 power-swap stations in China and 60 in Europe. "Here in the MENA region, our first power-swap station will be set up at the Yas Marina Circuit, with plans for further expansion in the near future," said the CEO of NIO.

Li pointed out that NIO differentiates itself through the unique services it offers. A prime example is NIO House at The Galleria Mall on Al Maryah Island, which is more than just a showroom. “It’s a place for people to connect, share ideas, and explore innovative opportunities. Our emphasis on nurturing a community underscores our user-first approach,” he said. “NIO aims to be a leader in both advanced technology and outstanding user experiences. This combination of innovation and community-driven services defines who we are as a brand.”

When asked why NIO chose Abu Dhabi as the launchpad for its regional and global operations, the company’s co-founder explained: “Abu Dhabi is a hub of innovation, and its Economic Vision 2030 prioritises sustainability and smart technologies, aligning perfectly with NIO’s brand vision. The city’s focus on fostering innovation, along with its strategic importance in the region, makes it the ideal starting point for our journey in the Middle East.”

NIO has made its debut in the UAE market with the introduction of its EL8 SUV, which is positioned in the hyper-premium segment. Priced between Dh359,000 and Dh390,000, the EL8 combines luxury with cutting-edge technology. “We began deliveries earlier this month, and the model has already garnered significant popularity in the local market, reflecting strong interest and excitement,” said Li.

Founded in November 2014, NIO has rapidly established itself as a leader in the premium smart electric vehicle market, growing network of users, employees, and investors worldwide. When asked about their mass market sub-brands, Li said “This year, we launched our second brand, ONVO, which is aimed at the mass market. It is more family-oriented, and we’ve already begun delivering vehicles under this brand. We also plan to introduce another brand called Firefly by the end of the year.”

When discussing why China has embraced electric vehicles more extensively than any other country or region, the CEO pointed to infrastructure. “Without well-developed infrastructure, the user experience suffers. If that experience isn't satisfactory, consumers will be reluctant to adopt EVs,” he explained.

He also highlighted another key lesson from China: the significant reduction in battery costs. “In China, the cost of battery packs has dropped to between one-half and one-third of what it was six years ago, making EVs far more accessible. This underscores the importance of ongoing innovation to drive affordability,” the CEO added.
