For workers in the UAE, the country is not only a land of unimaginable opportunities — but a second home where they feel valued and respected.

As the world marked Labour Day on May 1, the UAE honoured the dedication, resilience, and contributions of its diverse workforce, the people who form the backbone of the country’s economic development.

Waheed, a construction worker from India who has been living in Abu Dhabi for six years, feels proud whenever he sees the city’s skyline, especially the structures he had helped build.

“Every project I work on is like a fingerprint I leave behind. Working here has given me opportunities I never thought possible back home,” he told Aletihad.

Filipino domestic worker Lalita misses her family every day but every time she wakes up for work, she feels grateful.

“It’s not easy being away from home, especially during holidays. But I’m grateful for my job and my employer treats me well,” she said.

The UAE is home to workers from more than 200 nationalities, all contributing to sectors ranging from construction and hospitality to technology and healthcare.

With strong labour reforms in recent years, including the introduction of midday break rules and improved dispute resolution systems, the country is taking steps toward enhancing worker welfare.

Labour Day in the UAE serves not only as a time to recognise the hard work of countless people but also to reflect on how to make work environments safer and more fulfilling.

Delivery rider Mohammed came to the UAE from Pakistan “with nothing but a dream” — and while the daily grind may be challenging, he feels seen in the country.

“Life on the road is tough, especially in summer, but I feel respected. When customers smile or say ‘thank you,’ it makes a difference,” Mohammed said.
