ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)

AD Ports Group and Nimex Terminals have marked the groundbreaking of the UAE’s first private-sector Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) terminal hub at Khalifa Port.

The LPG terminal hub, announced in November 2025 in parallel with the LNG terminal hub development, is being developed to accommodate large, long-haul gas carriers, and will provide large-scale refrigerated storage and marine handling infrastructure for propane, butane and LPG mix products.

The development is aimed at strengthening the UAE’s role in facilitating global LPG flows between major production centres and high-growth demand markets across Asia, Africa, and Europe. It will also expand Khalifa Port’s energy infrastructure capabilities to meet evolving international trade demands.

Phase 1 of the project will include two full-containment refrigerated storage tanks with capacities of 50,000 and 67,000 cubic metres for propane and butane respectively, along with four mounded LPG bullet tanks with a combined capacity of 21,000 cubic metres for mixed LPG products. A similar expansion is planned under Phase 2, which will bring total terminal capacity to approximately 280,000 cubic metres.

The project also involves the construction of dedicated LPG jetties with a depth of 16 metres to enable the berthing and handling of large-scale LPG carriers. Phase 1 is expected to be commissioned within 36 months from the start of construction.

Saif Al Mazrouei, CEO, Ports Cluster – AD Ports Group, said the Nimex LPG terminal reflects a strategic infrastructure investment that strengthens Khalifa Port’s energy ecosystem, and reinforces its position as a regional and international gateway.

Azmat Mahmood, Chairman of Nimex Terminals, described the groundbreaking as a milestone for the company, and said the project will support trade growth and enhance energy connectivity while reinforcing the UAE’s role as a global energy hub.

“Our vision is to build a resilient, world‑class LPG logistics platform that connects global supply with regional demand through Abu Dhabi,” he said.

The terminal will be developed and operated in line with international standards for safety, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence. The use of full-containment tanks and mounded LPG bullet storage has been incorporated to enhance protection, mitigate risk, and ensure long-term reliability.

According to the statement, the Nimex LPG terminal will strengthen regional energy security and storage resilience, providing traders and industrial users with greater flexibility while supporting the continued growth of Khalifa Port as a multi-commodity gateway.
