BATOOL GHAITH (ABU DHABI)

Abu Dhabi is positioning itself as a global leader in space innovation, with an increasing number of companies contributing to the UAE’s ambitious vision for 2030. Among the major players in this industry is Space42, a space tech company that seamlessly combines satellite communications, geospatial analytics, and AI capabilities to pioneer innovative solutions across sectors.

In an interview with Aletihad at GITEX, Sulaiman Al Ali, Chief Commercial Officer at Space42, shared how the company is playing a crucial role in advancing the UAE’s space sector and reinforcing its status as a hub for technological innovation.

Satellite operations, which were once human-intensive, are now benefitting from AI-driven models, Al Ali said.

“We aim to reduce operational costs by using AI models that predict maintenance needs before issues arise,” Al Ali told Aletihad.
These models are designed to learn from previous data, helping Space42 efficiently manage its satellite fleet and reduce maintenance costs.

From Space to Land

In line with the UAE’s focus on food security, Space42 is targeting AgriTech with its innovative solutions.

Al Ali explained that combining satellite imagery with IoT data allows for accurate monitoring of soil conditions and crop health.
“By integrating these data sources, we can enhance reliability to over 90%, helping farmers take timely actions to optimise crop yields,” he said.

In trials, automated irrigation systems powered by AI have reduced water usage by up to 30%. “This kind of efficiency can be a game-changer in water-scarce regions like Africa,” Al Ali added.

A Focus on Homegrown Tech

Space42’s facilities are now assembling the second batch of Foresight satellites, aligning with Abu Dhabi’s goal to reduce reliance on external suppliers and enhance local capabilities, he said.

“We are increasing satellite assembly in Abu Dhabi, reducing external components and building the city’s reputation as a space tech leader.”
Space42 previously launched the Space Academy in partnership with the UAE Space Agency, offering specialised programmes for university graduates interested in space technology.

“We support students with lectures and hands-on experience to develop the next generation of space professionals,” Al Ali noted.
