SAYYED AL HAJAR (ABU DHABI)

Emirati graduates have joined the team of talented professionals working on ADNOC's Hail and Ghasha development project, currently underway. The project is the world's largest sour gas project.

The project that aims to utilise the potential of the Hail and Ghasha gas fields, along with other related fields, and plays a key role in achieving gas self-sufficiency for the United Arab Emirates. By the end of 2030, the Ghasha Concession is expected to produce more than 1.5 billion standard cubic feet per day (bscfd) of gas, enough to meet the daily gas consumption needs of Portugal, Ireland, and Greece combined. The project will also support ADNOC's plans to expand its gas business, Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) exports, and drive economic growth in the country.
Contributing to a Sustainable Future

Eman Tariq Al Masfari, an industrial engineer and one of over 20 graduates who recently began working on the project, said: "As an Emirati engineer, I am confident that my qualifications and skills will allow me to be a valuable member of the Hail and Ghasha development team. This is an opportunity for me to give back to my country, which has invested in my education and training."
Fatima Al Farsi, a marine pipeline installation engineer and another Emirati graduate, said: "We, the new graduates, are excited to use our education and skills on the Hail and Ghasha development project. This project will play a major role in achieving gas self-sufficiency for the UAE."

The Hail and Ghasha project is the first of its kind in the world for large-scale gas development projects, aiming to operate with net zero carbon emissions. The project design incorporates all the latest innovative emission reduction technologies into a single, unified solution. By using these cutting-edge carbon capture technologies, the project aims to capture and safely store 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year. This contributes to ADNOC's commitment to reach a carbon capture capacity of around 4 million tonnes annually.

The project's target for carbon capture aligns with ADNOC's ambition to double its carbon capture capacity to 10 million tonnes per year by 2030. This is equivalent to removing more than 2 million gasoline-powered vehicles from public highways.

Working with the project's contractors allows the project to benefit from the diverse skills of young Emiratis and brings new perspectives to the existing teams. Their engineering knowledge and data-driven insights are crucial factors in the development project's implementation.

A significant portion of the project's total value will be directed back into the local economy through ADNOC's In-Country Value (ICV) Program. This will empower local companies and create more job opportunities for skilled Emirati citizens.

Protecting the Environment

Faris Al Jabri, an operations engineer and one of the graduates working for the UAE-based National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC), said: "As an Emirati citizen, I am proud to have the trust of my country's leadership. I understand the responsibility entrusted to me to contribute to the development project of the Hail and Ghasha fields."

Because the Ghasha field is located within the Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the project team prioritizes protecting biodiversity and preserving the marine ecosystem. This is being achieved through the construction of several artificial islands. These islands eliminate the need for heavy drilling and provide additional habitats for marine life.

With a final investment decision (FID) made in late 2023, the Hail and Ghasha development project is on track. It has now entered the construction phase, with mobilisation work underway for both the offshore and onshore phases.

This project exemplifies ADNOC's dedication to investing in the UAE's future. By utilising the latest technologies and collaborating with talented Emirati graduates, ADNOC is ensuring the success of the Hail and Ghasha development project for the country and the world.
