Abu Dhabi and Dubai have improved their rankings on the Global Liveability Index 2024 released on Thursday.

The index, which evaluated 173 global cities over five categories - stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure - ranked them on how good they are likely to be for the residents living in their jurisdictions. The index is prepared by the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU), a sister organisation of The Economist.

Abu Dhabi was placed at 76th rank, up two ranks from last year, the highest in the MENA region. Dubai followed at 78th place, again two spots up from the previous index. According to media reports, index scores for both the cities is above 80, which, according to the EIU classification, offers good conditions for perfect living without any hindrances.

Vienna has been named the most liveable city in the world for third year running. The next nine spots are occupied by Copenhagen, Zurich, Melbourne, Calgary, Geneva, Sydney, Vancouver, Osaka and Auckland.

A note issued by the EIU said that this year's survey saw a rise in average scores, driven by gains in healthcare and education across developing countries, although this has been largely offset by declines in scores for several top-tier cities.

Western Europe has retained its position as the most liveable region in the world. The 30 Western European cities in this year's ranking reported an impressive average score of 92 out of 100.

Four Asia-Pacific cities - Melbourne and Sydney (Australia), Osaka (Japan) and Auckland (New Zealand) - are among this year's top 10 most liveable cities in the world.

The biggest improvement since last year has been in the island city of Hong Kong. Its ranking has jumped from 61st to 50th, on the back of improvements in its scores for stability and healthcare. Other Asian cities, including Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City and Bangalore, saw their healthcare or education indicators improve this year, pushing them up the rankings
