At least 13 people died when a train with 250 people on board derailed in the southern state of Oaxaca, Mexican authorities said on Sunday.
The Mexican Navy said in a statement that 13 people died in the incident and 98 were injured, of whom 36 people were being treated in hospital.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that five people were in a serious condition.
In an earlier statement the Navy had said that the train, composed of four cars and two locomotives, was carrying 241 passengers and nine members of staff when it derailed near the town of Nizcanda.
The Interoceanic Train was travelling across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec from the seaport of Salina Cruz on the Pacific coast to Coatzacoalcos in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Navy said it had deployed 360 naval personnel, 20 vehicles, four land ambulances, three air ambulances and a tactical drone to the search and rescue operation.
