Gargash: Justifying aggression against Gulf states threatens regional stability

ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)

Dr Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Advisor to the UAE President, warned that recent statements by Iranian officials justifying attacks on Gulf states represent a dangerous escalation that threatens regional stability and violates international law.

He added that such statements violate the United Nations Charter, including the prohibition of the threat or use of force, and reflect what he described as a pattern of behaviour that weakens the foundations of the international system and increases risks across the region.

"The justification offered by certain Iranian officials - including the extremist MP Hamid Rasai - for their country's aggression against the Gulf Arab states, with their absurd and irresponsible claims, and their explicit threats and justification for the military targeting of civilian and economic infrastructure, not only constitute a breach of international law, international humanitarian law and the principles of good neighbourliness, but also represent a dangerous approach that undermines the foundations of the international order and threatens regional stability," Gargash said in a statement on X on Thursday.

Gargash added that the statements amounted to "a clear violation of the United Nations Charter", and described them as "an irresponsible escalation that amount to the level of international crimes and exposed the region to grave risks".

He added that continued incitement and rhetoric that could harm civilian populations is unacceptable, calling for an immediate halt to Iranian aggression against neighbouring countries and adherence to international law.

Earlier, Gargash had addressed circulating claims about financial restrictions in the UAE, rejecting "rumours" suggesting limits on capital movement.

"We have repeatedly warned of the dangers of rumours in times of war. The claims circulating about restrictions being imposed on capital movements in the UAE are false and have been clearly refuted by the official authorities," he wrote on X.

"The UAE's economic history is based on openness and the free movement of capital, which is one of the pillars of its success and its appeal to investors.

"The UAE will return more determined and successful, and Iranian aggression will not succeed in its endeavours."
