AMEINAH ALZEYOUDI (ALETIHAD)
The youth will have a central, visible role when the UAE capital hosts the IUCN World Conservation Congress this year — the first time the world’s largest nature conservation event will be held in the region, the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) told Aletihad.
The emirate’s selection as a host city for the most influential gathering of nature experts and decision-makers was announced in April. New details highlight how the congress is being designed not only as a global platform for conservation but also as a powerful space for young changemakers to lead, innovate, and shape the future of environmental action.
In a statement to Aletihad, the EAD said a dedicated Youth Summit will run alongside the main event, featuring youth-led sessions, workshops, and exhibitions. The UAE Pavilion will include a specialised youth zone, created to amplify the voices of young leaders and spotlight their contributions to conservation and climate innovation.
“We’re not celebrating youth as future leaders alone – we recognise them as changemakers of today,” the EAD said. “The Youth Summit is being built in partnership with local and international stakeholders to ensure young perspectives are embedded throughout the congress.”
With over 10,000 delegates expected – including heads of state, global decision-makers, and renowned conservation experts – the congress promises to position Abu Dhabi as a global leader in environmental action. It is a powerful statement of the UAE’s growing role in shaping international discourse on biodiversity, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
Meticulous planning are already underway, said the EAD, the main partner of the UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment in organising the event.
The venue has been secured, strategic frameworks are in place, and operational details — from delegate experience to sustainable logistics — are being crafted with precision.
“Hosting this congress is not just an honour – it’s a reflection of the UAE’s deep commitment to environmental leadership. From submitting a strong bid to securing support at the highest levels, we’ve been the driving force behind this moment. It’s a testament to our vision, strategy, and determination to create lasting global impact,” the EAD said.
Set under the theme “Powering Transformative Conservation”, the congress will call for a new era of bold, inclusive, and forward-thinking environmental solutions.
Five core themes will shape the event: Scaling up resilient conservation efforts in a rapidly changing world; reducing the risks of climate action overshoot; delivering equity and ensuring no community is left behind; and transitioning to a nature-positive economy.
These themes underscore the congress’ broader mission: to unite nations, sectors, and communities in delivering meaningful, urgent action for nature.
“We are not just organising an event; we are shaping a pivotal moment in the history of global conservation,” the EAD said.
The congress will not be a final destination, but a launchpad for continued leadership. Abu Dhabi is committed to carrying the momentum forward — transforming from host to long-term hub for global conservation, nature-positive innovation, and climate action.
Building on the legacy of the 2021 Marseille Congress, Abu Dhabi aims to create meaningful, measurable outcomes — from protecting biodiversity and accelerating climate adaptation to combating pollution and promoting sustainable growth for future generations.
“We want this to be one of the most impactful congresses the world has ever seen. Our goal isn’t just to host a world-class event — it’s to leave a legacy that advances environmental progress for decades to come,” the EAD said.
