The New York University Abu Dhabi Institute has honoured the winners of “Dhikhr Award,” which recognises individuals who have made exceptional contributions to preserving the UAE’s history and culture.

Introduced in celebration of Eid Al Etihad, the Dhikhr (meaning “treasure” in Arabic) Award honours efforts that have enriched the UAE’s cultural and historical narrative. This year’s honourees, Frauke Heard-Bey and the late David Heard, were recognised for their scholarship and dedication, which have profoundly shaped the understanding of the UAE’s history and transformation.

The Cultural Adviser to the UAE President Zaki Nusseibeh also reflected on their enduring contributions during a commemorative discussion.

Executive Director of The NYUAD Institute Maurice A. Pomerantz said, “Launching this award in celebration of Eid Al Etihad underscores our role as a hub for scholarly dialogue, collaboration, and cultural preservation. By recognising the invaluable contributions of Frauke Heard-Bey and the late David Heard, we highlight the importance of preserving the UAE’s rich historical and cultural narrative.”

Head of Public Programming at The NYUAD Institute Nahed Ahmed, who conceptualised the award, reflected on its personal significance, “The Dhikhr Award is a deeply personal way to honour those who have documented our nation’s history. The Institute’s role as a centre for scholarly activity provides the perfect platform to recognise and celebrate these contributions.”

Since its founding in 2008, The NYUAD Institute has served as a hub for intellectual exploration, hosting over 1,500 academic conferences, lectures, and public events and welcoming over 1,000 speakers worldwide.
