The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has reported a notable increase in recreational fishing licences, signalling rising community awareness of the importance of following fishing regulations.
During the first and second quarters of 2024, EAD issued more than 4,300 licences, a significant jump from the 2,200 licences issued in the same period of 2023, reflecting a 95% increase.
This increase highlights the community’s commitment to conserving fishery resources and adhering to marine biodiversity laws.
“We thank recreational fishers for their cooperation and commitment to environmental regulations in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi,” EAD said in a statement on Thursday.
How to Obtain a Recreational Fishing Licence?
Individuals wishing to obtain a recreational fishing licence in Abu Dhabi can use the “TAMM” platform; search for “Recreational Fishing Licence”, select the appropriate licence category - either weekly or annual - submit the necessary documents, and pay the required fee: Dh120 for an annual licence or Dh30 for a weekly licence.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, although those under 18 can accompany an adult who holds a valid licence.
Licensee Obligations
Recreational fishing is only permitted with a valid EAD licence. Fishers must raise an international diving flag when employing spearguns and ensure that at least three license holders are present on the boat.
They are required to disclose fishing data, including types, quantities, and sizes of the catch, to EAD and must present their licence upon request by EAD or authorised officials. Additionally, fishers are prohibited from disposing of or selling fish while at sea and must not keep aquatic resources for ornamental purposes.
Abide by Permitted Fishing Sites
Fishing is allowed in designated coastal areas and within the waters of the emirate, but prohibited in restricted zones such as no-fishing areas, urban development sites, military zones, and protected natural areas.
It is essential for fishers to observe all laws and regulations pertaining to fish species and quantities allowed for recreational fishing.
