Abu Dhabi (Aletihad) - As global hub for innovation and creativity and a model for the cities of the future, President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on June 22, 2022 directed that the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) be held in Expo City Dubai, the site of “Expo 2020 Dubai”, hosted by the UAE.
His Highness’s directive to host COP28 at Expo City Dubai is due to the futuristic locale’s exceptional track-record, which brought the world together for six months in the UAE for the Expo event.
As both events share the goal of enhancing sustainability and international action, the choice extends the legacy of Expo and its core message: “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”, and reaffirms the country’s ongoing commitment to the Expo’s themes: Opportunity, Mobility, and Sustainability.
Expo City Dubai, the construction of which was announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, is equipped with advanced and sustainable infrastructure, serving as a model of future urban design, while preserving the UAE’s legacy as a driver of regional and global progress.
His Highness said at the time: “Expo City Dubai will be an environmentally friendly, family friendly, future-generation friendly, technology friendly, and economy friendly city, a city connected to a port and two airports, and linked to beautiful memories for millions of people. The magic of the Expo will continue; Al Wasl Dome, Expo Waterfalls, and the UAE, Alif, and Terra Pavilions will remain.”
His Highness added: “The new city will include a new museum, a global exhibitions centre, headquarters of major companies, and the pavilions of Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Egypt, and others. It will be a city bustling with economic activity and filled with joy for our children and families, God willing. It will be a city representing every city’s dream.”
Expo City Dubai is based on the legacy plan of Expo 2020 Dubai and is also part of the Dubai Urban Plan 2040, building on the momentum and spectacular success of Expo 2020 Dubai in creating a future city that is environmentally friendly and technologically advanced.
The city includes several main pavilions from Expo 2020 Dubai, as well as a variety of attractions, offices, entertainment facilities, restaurants, cafes, sports clubs, and a shopping centre directly accessible via the Dubai Metro.
The city also includes the Dubai Exhibition Centre, which provides world-class services for hosting exhibitions and conferences. LandmarksExpo City Dubai’s most attractive areas include the Al Wasl Dome, Al Thuraya Park (the rotating observation tower), the Expo Waterfalls, and the Sustainability and Mobility Pavilion (Terra), and “Alif”, which provide interactive educational experiences for visitors.
The city is single-use plastics-free, and retains 80% of its infrastructure and buildings, including 123 LEED-certified buildings, which indicates advanced levels of sustainable design, construction, and operations.
It is also the first community in the region certified by the International WELL Building Institute, signifying that the city has world-class features of the built environment that impact human health and well-being across the categories of air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and mind.
