India and Pakistan have announced the first day of the holy month of Ramadan on March 12.
Pakistan's Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Maulana Syed Muhammad Abdul Khabir Azad on Monday announced that the moon of the holy month of Ramadan has been sighted in various areas of the country and the first of Ramadan would begin on Tuesday, March 12.
Addressing a press conference, he said that despite cloudy weather conditions across the country, the committee had received solid testimonies of moon sighting from a number of areas.
Meanwhile, in India, the Ramadan moon was also sighted in various parts of the country and Muslims there will begin fasting from Tuesday as well, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind said.
A meeting of the Ruyat-e-Hilal Committee under the presidentship of Maulana Niaz Ahmed Farooqui, secretary Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, was held on Monday.
It has been verified that the moon has been sighted in several parts of the country, a statement issued by the Muslim organisation said.
"Thus, it is declared that the first of Ramadan falls on Tuesday, March 12, 2024," the statement said.
