In the heart of Al Ain, Emirati heritage came alive at the Traditional Handicrafts Festival in Souq Al Qattara, a vibrant celebration of the UAE's rich artisanal traditions.
The 11th edition of the festival concluded on Thursday, wrapping up a 20-day showcase of Emirati heritage — a living museum where the past met the present through craft, culture, and community.
Organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, this year's edition carried the theme "A Journey through Community Traditional Craftsmanship”, aligning with the UAE's Year of Community.
The festival empowered local artisans and families as it introduced heritage skills to today's consumers and encouraged innovation in design, production, and storytelling.
Four pavilions — Emirati Gahwa, Traditional Weaving, Sadu and Khoos Fashion, and Metal and Leather Crafts — showcased the UAE's artisanal legacy.
The festival also featured live demonstrations, performing arts, educational workshops, games and competitions, in addition to the first traditional games tournament for People of Determination.
Ali Al Kaabi, a participant in the Khoos Storage Bag Stitching, said the festival is a great opportunity to gather Emirati artisans to showcase their work.
“It feels great to be here in Al Ain, and to have the chance to showcase our talents and traditions and also teach the new generation about Emirati traditions,” Al Kaabi told Aletihad.
He said Khoos Stitching is part of Emirati culture that has been passed down through generations in his family.
Mahla Al Hosani, a participant in Wooden Sadu Loom, said the Sadu looming tradition has evolved with the times.
In the past, Sadu was used to weave wool into tents, blankets, camel saddlebags, and majlis floor cushions, she said.
“Nowadays, I make Sadu scarves. Some people are allergic to cotton and other materials so it is a great alternative,” Al Hosani told Aletihad.
Maryam Ali, a visitor at the festival, said she loves to see such events bring Emirati heritage alive.
“This reminds us of our traditions and culture. It warms my heart when I see all the handicrafts and talent that is out there,” she told Aletihad.
She said the festival also brings families together and offers something for everyone, especially for children to enjoy and experience the authentic culture of the UAE.
