TALAH TURK (ABU DHABI)
While Abu Dhabi has a fantastic collection of aquariums, sanctuaries, and zoos, it also offers a variety of more immersive, unconventional wildlife experiences. From getting up close with falcons and camels to learning about turtle rehabilitation, visitors can interact with the UAE's animals in memorable, hands-on ways that go beyond the traditional zoo experience.
Meet UAE's National Bird
As the national bird of the UAE, the falcon symbolises strength, pride, and nobility, making it one of the most fascinating creatures to learn about and interact with in Abu Dhabi.
While falcons can often be seen at cultural events and desert safari experiences, the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital offers one of the most immersive and educational encounters.
The world's first and largest hospital dedicated to this great bird blends wildlife with Emirati tradition. Guided tours at the award-winning specialised facility teach visitors about falconry and give them the chance to hold these remarkable birds.
In the hospital's gardens, guests can also watch falcons flying around the aviary and observe routine care procedures such as a "falcon pedicure."
Camels in Emirati Element
Another magnificent creature deeply woven into Emirati heritage and culture is the Arabian Camel. No trip to the UAE is complete without encountering them, whether on desert farms or roaming near highways in large herds.
One of the best places to observe camels up close is Al Ain's famous camel market, where visitors can gain insight into an important part of traditional Emirati life and the region's long-standing relationship with these animals.
Pre-arranged visits with market staff offer a closer look at this lively market, where camels can be seen throughout the day as locals trade livestock.
For those interested in seeing camels in motion, camel racing offers an exciting alternative. Often a surprising item on the itinerary, camels can be seen racing at impressive speeds down purpose-built paths in Al Wathba Camel Racetrack or Al Maqam Racetrack near Al Ain.
Saving the Turtles
The Wildlife Rescue Centre at the National Aquarium Abu Dhabi, implemented in collaboration with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing native wildlife across the Emirate.
Visitors can join guided tours of the facility to see turtles receiving care and learn more about the full rehabilitation process, from rescue and treatment catered to each animal's individual needs, to their return to the wild if and when possible.
Amal, a permanent resident at the aquarium, was rescued after being found entangled in a fishing net and nursed back to health.
Due to the loss of a flipper, the loggerhead turtle cannot survive alone back in the wild, and therefore, Amal now serves as an ambassador for her species, helping visitors better understand these remarkable marine creatures.
Breakfast with Giraffes
A visit to the Emirates Park Zoo can be a lot more interesting if you book the "Breakfast with Giraffes" experience, the first of its kind in the Middle East.
Alongside a pre-ordered breakfast spread, groups of up to four people can feed the giraffes their favourite treats and take pictures as they lean into the dedicated breakfast area, creating a close and unforgettable wildlife encounter.
