AMEINAH ALZEYOUDI (ABU DHABI)

As downpours and overcast skies continue to affect many parts of the UAE, authorities on Wednesday reiterated an important reminder to the public: whether it's work, errands, or prayers, make safety a top priority.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) issued guidelines calling on employers to follow safety measures, adjust working hours where needed, and maintain clear emergency response plans.

"Workforce safety is a shared responsibility, and your compliance supports business continuity under all conditions," the ministry said.

The advisory outlined measures across four key areas: work sites, transport and mobility, worker accommodation, and emergency response.

Employers were asked to assess site risks, postpone high-risk tasks when necessary, and ensure drainage systems are functioning properly. Worker transport must be fit for wet conditions, with drivers reminded to remain cautious. Accommodation facilities should also be inspected for leaks, water accumulation, and electrical safety.

The ministry further called on businesses to strengthen emergency preparedness by setting out clear response procedures, assigning on-site supervisors, and coordinating closely with relevant authorities when required.

On the roads, Abu Dhabi Police have intensified operations while advising motorists to stay alert as reduced visibility and slippery surfaces increase the likelihood of skidding.

Brigadier Mahmoud Yousef Al Baloushi, Director of the Traffic and Security Patrols Directorate, emphasised the need to slow down and maintain a safe following distance. He noted that common causes of accidents in such weather include excessive speed, lane indiscipline, driver distraction, and abrupt braking or lane changes without ensuring the road is clear.

Patrols have been deployed to regulate traffic, assist drivers, and swiftly respond to incidents and potential disruptions. Dynamic speed reduction devices were also activated to keep driving limits aligned with real-time conditions.

During heavy rain, authorities emphasised that staying home remains the safest option whenever possible. This guidance extends to places of worship, with the General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat (Awqaf) urging residents to pray at home.

In a social media advisory, the authority instructed imams in affected areas to announce "pray in your homes" after the call to prayer. Where mosque prayers proceed, noon and afternoon prayers, as well as sunset and night prayers, may be combined depending on local weather conditions.
