As the UAE continues to experience rainfall this week, the Emergencies, Crisis and Disasters Management Centre - Abu Dhabi (ADCMC) has published an awareness video highlighting key safety precautions for the public during these weather conditions.
The video emphasises that even small actions can make a significant difference in reducing risks and preventing accidents, particularly during heavy rains, strong winds and unstable weather.
The 10 key safety steps highlighted in the video include:
1. Avoid storing flammable materials near electrical wiring or inside electrical rooms. This reduces the risk of fire, especially as moisture and electrical faults can occur during rainy conditions.
2. Ensure regular maintenance of electrical and water systems is carried out by qualified technicians. Proper maintenance helps detect faults early and prevents system failures.
3. Check that all electrical wires are properly insulated and not exposed. Exposed wires can lead to electric shocks or short circuits, especially when water is present.
4. Do not open sewage manhole covers, as this is extremely dangerous. Open manholes can quickly fill with water and become invisible hazards, posing serious risks to pedestrians.
5. Keep a distance from buildings under construction due to the risk of falling objects. Strong winds can dislodge materials or equipment, increasing the likelihood of injuries.
6. Secure loose outdoor items and objects that could be carried away by strong winds. Items such as outdoor furniture can move and cause damage to property or harm others.
7. Avoid driving during rainfall unless absolutely necessary; follow official instructions and speed limits displayed on electronic signs. Reduced visibility and slippery roads increase the risk of accidents.
8. Avoid bodies of water and valleys, as vehicles are not designed for such conditions. Even shallow water can affect vehicle control or lead to sudden breakdowns and dangerous situations.
9. Ensure doors and windows are properly closed to prevent wind damage and water leaks. Proper sealing helps protect homes from internal damage caused by strong winds and heavy rain.
10. Avoid going to the sea and beaches during unstable weather conditions. Sea conditions can change rapidly, making coastal areas unsafe.
The awareness video also encourages residents to follow official updates and safety guidelines, and share the information with family and friends to ensure wider community awareness.
These recommendations are reinforced by the broader safety guidelines issued by ADCMC, which outline precautions before, during, and after adverse weather. These include securing properties, limiting unnecessary movement, avoiding flood-prone areas, and staying clear of contaminated water or damaged infrastructure following rainfall.
Authorities continue to urge the public to remain attentive as unstable weather conditions are expected to continue, adding that preparedness and awareness remain key to ensuring safety.
