Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, President and CEO of Frontier25 and The Climate Tribe, has met with Professor Eric Xing, President of the Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), to discuss potential areas of collaboration on translating AI into climate impact and the latest developments in climate, sustainability, and AI.

This included dialogue on K2 Think, an open-source system for advanced AI reasoning that was launched in September by MBZUAI and G42. The model is on par with leading global AI models and represents a major milestone for AI advancement in the UAE.

Recent climate changes initiatives by MBZUAI include launching a first-of-its-kind weather forecast training programme to help governments deliver tailored forecasts to meet local agricultural needs, including those of millions of farmers, with the University of Chicago in September.

Last year, the university became the founding knowledge partner for the United Nations Development Programme’s AI for Sustainable Development Platform (AI4SDP), an initiative born out of COP28.

Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan said: “AI is not just enabling industries to embrace more sustainable and efficient ways of working, it is changing the way we connect and communicate, the way we understand the planet’s delicate and evolving ecosystems, and the speed with which we can build and implement solutions that advance climate action. The work being done at MBZUAI has implications far beyond anything we can imagine today, and we have a responsibility to use this knowledge for a far greater good, to repair and protect our world.”

In October, Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan hosted a delegation of World Economic Forum Young Global Leaders for a From Heritage to Horizon programme, which included interactive sessions at MBZUAI on the role of AI in building a sustainable future.
