Honouring the UAE flag and ensuring its proper use is a responsibility shared by everyone - yet one group of volunteers has made it their ultimate mission.

Established in May 2023, the Volunteer Flag Protection Team has become one of the UAE’s most inspiring national initiatives, dedicated to safeguarding the nation’s most cherished symbol.

Team leader Mohsen Ahmed Al-Hanifa Al-Harthi explained that the initiative was born out of “a national and voluntary spirit rooted in pride, belonging, and loyalty.”

“Volunteering is a national responsibility born out of love and devotion to our country. We draw our inspiration and determination from our leadership, who serve as role models for dedication and giving,” Al-Harthi told Aletihad in an interview.

Guiding the community in caring for and showing respect to the UAE flag, the Flag Protection Team organises awareness workshops, launches initiatives to strengthen national identity, and helps ensure flags are kept in good condition.

Since its founding, the team has carried out more than 45 initiatives across the Emirates in cooperation with government and community entities. These include community campaigns, field visits, and awareness events.

Among the team’s most notable achievements is the Flag Protection Document – an electronic pledge encouraging individuals to uphold respect for the UAE flag and deepen their understanding of its significance.

The document, though concise, carries a powerful message of love, loyalty, and belonging. “Its words may be few, but its meaning is great,” Al-Harthi said. “It enhances awareness and instils responsibility toward our national symbol.”

The initiative has been warmly received nationwide, spreading rapidly through social media and community networks. It has also inspired institutions and schools to encourage students and staff to sign the document as a pledge of national pride and unity.

To help ensure that flags across the country remain in good condition, the team offers an online service through which the community can request replacements for worn-out flags.

Damaged flags are properly recycled in collaboration with Tadweer and Dubai Municipality. In partnership with Al Ain Municipality, the team has already collected more than 85 flags of various sizes for responsible recycling.

In celebration of UAE Flag Day, the team announced new initiatives under the slogan “Our Flag in Our Heart,” which reflect the spirit of unity and belonging shared by the Emirati community.

Volunteers will make special visits to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research’s offices in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, engaging with students, staff, and officials.

Through ongoing outreach in schools, universities, parks, and public spaces, the Flag Protection Team continues to promote a culture of respect for the UAE flag.

As Al-Harthi said, “The Emirati people’s love for their flag is deep and sincere – it is a legacy we are proud to preserve for generations to come.”
