In what appears to be a response to tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump, the UAE Embassy in Washington reaffirmed the strength of the UAE-US economic relationship, emphasising its role in supporting American jobs. In a post on X, the embassy highlighted that the UAE enjoys the third-largest trade surplus globally with the US, amounting to nearly $19.5 billion in 2024.
The post referenced an article titled "UAE-US: The Trillion Dollar Economic Partnership," outlining how direct Emirati investments and significant purchases across aerospace, energy, technology, and healthcare have helped drive the US economy. “With a long track record of successful investment and trade, the UAE has a $1 trillion economic relationship with the US – and wants to do more,” the article stated.
The article detailed various milestones and economic partnerships in the UAE-US relations. Recent years have seen major UAE investments in the US technology sector.
Mubadala has played a pivotal role, co-leading a $2.25 billion investment in self-driving car company Waymo and backing US chipmaker AMD. Abu Dhabi’s G42 has partnered with Microsoft in a $1.5 billion deal to expand AI and cloud solutions. Additionally, the UAE’s DAMAC Properties committed $20 billion to develop data centres across the Midwest and Sun Belt, bolstering US digital infrastructure.
Beyond technology, UAE investments in American energy and manufacturing have also surged. ADIA, Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund, invested $500 million in US power firm AlphaGen, while IBM and Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) launched an AI Center of Excellence to advance carbon-neutral solutions.
“Building on a longstanding security partnership, the UAE is creating prosperity for American workers, growth for the economy and ensuring a more secure global supply chain for American products,” the article said.
The UAE has consistently been a top destination for US exports, totaling nearly $27 billion in 2024, reinforcing its position as a crucial trade partner. The embassy’s message underscores the UAE’s commitment to fostering economic cooperation despite shifting US trade policies.
