The UAE Food Bank (EFB) and Tadweer Group have renewed calls for addressing food waste.
As part of their environmental sustainability goals, the UAE Food Bank (EFB), part of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), successfully diverted 5,466 tonnes of food from landfill in 2024, thus lowering the emissions resulting from food waste.
This move aligns with the UAE's goal of decreasing food wastage by 30% by the year 2027, in support of spearheading sustainability efforts both nationally and globally.
The number of beneficiaries of the EFB has reached 28.9 million worldwide, marking a 55% increase from 2023.
As part of its global partnerships and emergency relief efforts, the EFB distributed 166.7 tonnes of food to the Emirates Red Crescent.
During Ramadan, the EFB urges the public, via their social platforms, to adopt practices that minimise food waste during iftar, the fast-breaking meal at sunset.
It suggests tangible implementations like preparing new meals with leftover food, properly storing them, and donating any extra food to charity.
The EFB recommends organising meal plans and smart shopping, i.e. putting down a shopping list, checking on pantry stocks, avoiding impulse purchases, and watching for expiration dates.
Similarly, Tadweer Group, a leader in revolutionising waste and unlocking its value, shared tips for reducing food waste.
The group called on consumers to prepare a shopping list after checking through their fridge or cupboard and refrain from over-buying.
The Group also suggests sharing an extra meal with other people or donating to food banks nearby in case of surplus.
