KHALED AL KHAWALDEH (ABU DHABI)

As Oman prepares to celebrate its National Day on November 18, the partnership between the United Arab Emirates and Oman comes into focus, reflecting decades of shared history, economic ties, and cultural heritage.

The two neighbouring countries have cultivated a relationship that reinforces regional stability within the GCC and aims to pave a vision for a prosperous Middle East.

In a recent release from the UAE Government, President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan described the bond as a "brotherhood rooted in history and strengthened by time," while His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, affirmed that "Oman is a part of us, and we are part of them."

The UAE and Oman share a unique relationship marked by common traditions, cultural heritage, and mutual respect.

Leaders from both nations have consistently emphasised the depth of their ties.

Most notably, the depth of the relationship is most emphasised by the shared heritage of Bedouin customs, maritime trade, and the blending of Arabic poetry, music, and arts.

However, this cultural affinity extends beyond symbolic gestures and the two countries consistently collaborate on everything from infrastructure to trade.

Economic Collaboration
Economic ties form the backbone of UAE-Oman relations. In the first half of 2024, non-oil trade between the two nations reached Dh27 billion, reflecting a 5% growth compared to the same period in 2023, according to government figures.

This upward trajectory highlights the resilience of their partnership, particularly in key sectors like manufacturing and logistics.

Oman ranks as the UAE's second-largest Gulf trading partner, accounting for 17% of the UAE's non-oil trade with GCC nations.

In terms of re-exports, Oman is the fourth-largest destination globally for UAE goods, comprising 13% of all re-export activity within the GCC.

The partnership extends to investments as well. By the end of 2022, Oman's cumulative foreign direct investment (FDI) in the UAE was valued at $660 million.

This capital is distributed across various sectors, including renewable energy, technology, and logistics.

Additionally, the UAE is Oman's top trading partner, accounting for 26% of Oman's global imports and over 17% of its non-oil exports.

High-level visits between leaders have reinforced the strong economic partnership. In April 2024, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman visited the UAE, resulting in agreements worth Dh129 billion.

These include ambitious projects in renewable energy, green hydrogen, digital infrastructure, and rail connectivity.

The UAE-Oman Rail Network, valued at Dh11 billion, is among the most significant initiatives, promising to enhance trade efficiency and bolster connectivity.

Meanwhile, a partnership between Abu Dhabi's ADQ and Oman Investment Authority focuses on technology-driven solutions.

Another highlight is the Dh117 billion industrial and energy collaboration, which hopes to position both nations as leaders in renewable energy and sustainability.

These agreements not only boost economic growth but also align with broader GCC goals for regional integration.

Strategic Relationship
Beyond economic collaboration, UAE-Oman relations are pivotal in fostering GCC unity.

Their shared vision of regional security and stability is evident in their diplomatic efforts and alignment on international issues.

The two nations work closely on peace initiatives, counter-terrorism strategies, and humanitarian missions.

During President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's visit to Oman in September 2022, the two nations signed 16 agreements and memoranda of understanding.

These covered sectors including economic cooperation, cultural exchange, science and technology, security, and energy, signifying a comprehensive approach to strengthening bilateral ties.

Both countries are key members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), where they collaborate on political, economic, and security strategies and both usually move in tandem on global and regional issues, with a shared vision of prosperity and peace.

Celebrations Reflecting Strong Ties Between Two Nations
Annual events across the UAE celebrate Omani culture, history, and achievements, inviting citizens and residents to join the festivities.

Iconic buildings are illuminated with the colours of the Omani flag, while Omani visitors arriving at UAE borders and airports are welcomed with flowers, gifts, and special passport stamps inspired by the occasion.
