The World Leaders Climate Action Summit at the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) commenced on Tuesday in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The opening is attended by Heads of State and Government, party delegations, invited guests of the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Heads of the United Nations and related organisations and specialised agencies and selected Heads of intergovernmental and representatives of non-governmental organisations constituencies.
The summit signifies the importance for world leaders to engage and enhance ambition and enable action to reduce emissions, adapt to climate change, and address loss and damage.
This effort seeks to implement and transform key climate related decisions into concrete actions and credible plans to tackle climate change, building on the achievements of COP28 and the historic “UAE Consensus”.
The UAE Consensus includes an unprecedented reference to transitioning away from all fossil fuels in energy systems in a just, orderly and equitable manner in this critical decade to enable the world to reach net zero emissions by 2050, in keeping with the science. It also offers a new, specific target of tripling renewables and doubling energy efficiency by 2030.
