Aletihad recently attended the opening ceremony of the Amazon Cup of National Teams in São Luís, Brazil, an international football championship that uses the power of sports to drive meaningful societal change.
Held at Castelão Stadium, the "Legends League" brought together iconic players from renowned football nations like Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and Angola, transforming the arena into a field where the ultimate victory is not just a trophy, but a collective push towards environmental responsibility and a greener future.
Brazilian sports officials warmly welcomed Aletihad as a guest of honour, celebrating the enduring ties between Brazil and the UAE, anchored in a shared passion for sports and decades of shared achievements. They reflected on the rich history of collaboration, highlighting the contributions of Brazilian players and coaches to the growth of sports in the UAE.
Dr. Hamad Al-Kaabi, CEO of Aletihad News Centre, presented a framed photograph from Aletihad’s archives commemorating Carlos Alberto Parreira’s 2005 visit to the newspaper’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi. Parreira, the acclaimed Brazilian football manager, famously guided Brazil to victory in the 1994 World Cup and holds the record for attending the most FIFA World Cup final tournaments, with six appearances.
In return, Dr. Al-Kaabi received a football and a Brazilian national team jersey signed by several legendary players, including Ed Carlos and Michael - a gesture that symbolises the mutual respect and bond between the two nations.
The Brazilian officials expressed their pride in the ongoing relations with the UAE, underscoring the importance of this partnership in advancing sports and strengthening cultural exchange. They acknowledged Aletihad's contributions to deepening these bonds and commended its dedication to sustainability through sports-driven initiatives.
Dr. Al-Kaabi conveyed appreciation to Brazilian officials for their warm reception and stressed the event’s significance in promoting environmental action. He highlighted the UAE’s leadership in global sustainability efforts, emphasising the importance of using sports as a platform for engaging audiences and raising awareness about this pressing issue.
