NEW YORK (ALETIHAD)

The United Nations (UN) marked Saturday as International Civil Aviation Day, highlighting its sustainability and the importance of the civil aviation to the social and economic development globally.

The UN stated that the purpose of International Civil Aviation Day is to help generate and reinforce worldwide awareness of the importance of international civil aviation to the social and economic development of States and of the unique role of ICAO in helping States to cooperate and realise a truly global rapid transit network at the service of all humanity.

As the UN and world nations have now adopted Agenda 2030 and embarked on a new era of global sustainable development, the importance of aviation as an engine of global connectivity has never been more relevant to the Chicago Convention's objectives of looking to international flight as a fundamental enabler of global peace and prosperity.

Every five years, coinciding with ICAO anniversaries (2014/2019/2024/2029/etc.), the ICAO Council establishes a special anniversary theme for International Civil Aviation Day. The council representatives select a theme for the entire four-year intervening period between these anniversary years.

Safe Skies, Sustainable Future

On 7 December 2024, the UN marks the 80th anniversary of signing the Convention on International Civil Aviation in Chicago, United States. For eight decades, this defining international agreement has served as the foundation for the development of the global civil aviation system, benefiting all nations.

Notably, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has been the driving force behind the safe, secure, and sustainable development of global aviation for 80 years. Since 1944, ICAO has set the standards that have enabled the industry to thrive, while championing socio-economic progress, gender equality, and a culture of innovation.

ICAO reaffirms its unwavering commitment to reducing aviation's carbon footprint, aiming to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
