Magnitude 5.9 earthquake hits central Japan

TOKYO (WAM)

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 hit the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, central Japan, on Monday, but no tsunami warning was issued, Kyodo News reported, citing Japan's weather agency.

The 6:31 am quake registered upper 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Wajima and Suzu, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The quake was at a depth of 10 km.
