DINA MAHMOUD (WASHINGTON, LONDON)

Western experts specialising in opinion polls and public opinion studies have cautioned against making premature predictions about the outcome of the upcoming US presidential race.

Despite prevailing indications pointing to a rematch between incumbent Democratic President Joe Biden and his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump, uncertainties abound due to numerous unresolved political and economic factors.

According to a survey by the global market research firm Ipsos issued earlier in January, the political and economic landscape in the United States remains too fluid to forecast the results of a potential Biden-Trump showdown confidently.

Trump’s ability to secure the Republican nomination, following victories in the initial rounds of internal primaries, adds another layer of unpredictability to the race. One significant factor expected to influence voter sentiment in the months leading up to the election on November 5 is the prevailing economic situation dominating the American political arena.

Experts suggest that the trajectory of the American economy, particularly the economic performance results for the second quarter of 2024 (April to June), will be pivotal, as strong economic growth during this period could bolster Biden’s chances of securing a second term.

On the political front, the primary issue capturing voters’ attention in the nine months leading to the election remains to be seen. If the central theme revolves around “saving democracy” in the United States, Biden’s prospects for re-election could be favourable.

Conversely, a focus on the economy, immigration, or crime reduction could advantage the Republican contender, who aims for a White House comeback. Moreover, unexpected issues could emerge in the lead-up to the election, reminiscent of the 2020 race when the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted voter concerns and contributed to Trump’s decreased support and eventual loss.

Ipsos experts also noted that while Biden’s incumbency lends him significant leverage in the electoral battle, it simultaneously poses a risk, rendering him vulnerable to criticism from his Republican adversary, whether Trump or another candidate.
