A strong earthquake shook the greater Tokyo region, authortities said on Wednesday, adding that there was no risk of a tsunami.
The epicentre of the 5.0-magnitude quake was in Ibaraki Prefecture, neighbouring Tokyo, at a depth of about 50 kilometres, Japan's meteorological agency said.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) put the magnitude at 4.9.
There were initially no reports of damage or injuries.
