BATOOL GHAITH (ABU DHABI)

UAE residents are making the most of the spring weather, with parks, waterfronts and cycling tracks filling up as people head outdoors.

With mild temperatures and longer daylight hours, the season offers one of the best times of the year to stay active, explore nature, and enjoy a range of outdoor activities.

Sama Haddad, a Jordanian residing in Dubai, said she had been waiting for the perfect time to go kayaking.

“My friends and I went kayaking in Hatta dam last weekend and it was amazing, so much fun and relaxing at the same time as we were surrounded by nature,” Haddad told Aletihad.

She said that many people were out enjoying the nice weather, even with their pets. “We saw one lady who came to kayak and brought her dog.”

Hazem Fawzy, an Egyptian expat in Abu Dhabi, has also been enjoying the weather outdoors. “I have been cycling every evening around sunset in Hudayriyat. Such places make it very easy to stay active, and it actually motivates me to go as the sunset always looks great,” Fawzy told Aletihad.

He said the sense of community is also as important as the sport itself. “It is very nice to see so many people outside. I also love group hiking trips, which I am planning to go on this weekend.”

Rajesh Kohli, a kayak operator at Reem Central Park, said people have been coming every day to kayak through the mangroves.

“Demand has been strong, especially during sunset,” Kohli told Aletihad. “There are families, groups of friends, even teenagers who want to enjoy nature.”

As the season continues, the UAE’s parks, tracks, and coastal spaces remain busy with residents making the most of the pleasant weather, here is a list of outdoor activities to do:

Kayaking

For those who enjoy water sports, kayaking has become one of the most popular outdoor activities in the UAE.

Hatta dam is one of the UAE’s most popular kayaking spots, where visitors paddle through calm turquoise waters surrounded by the Hajar mountains.

Residents can also paddle through Abu Dhabi’s mangroves surrounded by natural mangrove forests. Locations such as Jubail Island and Reem Central Park offer kayaks and paddle boats for people to enjoy views of the city skyline.

Hiking

Spring is also an ideal time to explore hiking and walking trails across the UAE’s mountains and desert landscapes.

The mountains of Ras Al Khaimah, such as Jebel Jais, offer hiking trails for all levels. Trails on Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain and the popular Rabi Tower Trail in Khorfakkan, Sharjah, are also worth exploring.

Cycling

Cycling has become increasingly popular in Abu Dhabi in recent years, driven by the expansion of dedicated cycling infrastructure.

Among the popular cycling destinations are Al Hudayriat Island and Al Wathba. The iconic Formula 1 circuit at Yas Island also opens its track to the public for fitness sessions, allowing people to walk, run or cycle on the race circuit with the TrainYAS initiative.

Beach Horseback Riding

For a more unique outdoor experience, horseback riding along the coast offers a different way to explore the landscape.

In Al Shahama, guided beach rides take visitors along the shoreline. Similar experiences can also be found around Al Reem Island, where coastal trails and waterfront paths allow riders to enjoy the sea breeze and sunset views.

On Hudayriat Island and nearby beach areas, residents can join guided horse rides along the shore, combining light exercise with scenic ocean views.

Surfing and Water Sports

Surf Abu Dhabi are offering free surfing sessions throughout the month of April for residents.

While Yas Waterworld in Yas Island has recently unveiled its newest expansion, introducing a collection of 11 new slides for visitors to enjoy.
