MAYS IBRAHIM (RAS AL KHAIMAH)
The hit historical drama "Al Boom", an original production by Abu Dhabi Media Network, is set to return for a second season during Ramadan 2025.
The series, which captivated audiences in 2024 and was one of the most-watched Arabic shows in the UAE, continues its exploration of Emirati heritage and the gripping maritime history of the Gulf.
Set against the backdrop of World War II, "Al Boom" follows the ambitious journey of Emirati sailor Shihab, portrayed by actor Omar Al Mulla. As Season 2 unfolds, viewers will witness Shihab's evolution from a simple ship captain to a major player in the maritime trade, facing new challenges in both the treacherous waters and the shifting world of commerce.
New Challenges to Overcome
In an interview with Aletihad, Al Mulla, who plays the lead role of Shihab, reflected on his character's transformation in the new season.
"In the first season, the audience got to meet Shihab and witness his struggle to establish himself as a captain. Now, a few years have passed, and Shihab has grown not only in age but in his aspirations. He's no longer just transporting goods, he's become a trader himself, working to sell the goods he owns," Al Mulla said. "This season is full of growth, new challenges and a deeper exploration of his character."
He noted that "Al Boom" captures the essence of Emirati culture, shedding a light on the resilience and spirit of men in that era who battled the strong currents of the sea to secure the nation's future.
"If it weren't for that period of struggle, the UAE wouldn't have reached its current level of success. Shihab is one of those men, who you get to see on screen how, despite his struggles, achieves the goals he sets for himself," added Al Mulla.
Season 2 also brings significant development to the character of Nasser, portrayed by Emirati actor Abdallah Bin Haidar.
"Nasser's journey continues in season two, but with more depth. His relationship with the coast evolves, and the intensity of his struggles deepens," Bin Haidar explained in an interview with Aletihad.
"This season, we see Nasser navigating even more dramatic challenges. It's a transformation that reflects the growth of the show itself."
Fresh, Global Talent in Season 2
This season also introduces fresh faces to the series, adding an international flavour.
Syrian actor Bassem Yakhour joins the cast, bringing invaluable experience to the production, while actress Shruti Sharma from India and a number of talented rising stars from the UK enrich the show with diverse perspectives.
"The addition of actors from different backgrounds elevates the show to a global level," said Al Mulla.
"The quality of production, acting, and direction has been tailored to meet global standards. We're showing the world that Emirati drama can stand alongside international productions."
A Rising Emirati Drama Scene
Aletihad also spoke to Mansoor Al Feeli, a seasoned Emirati actor who plays the role of Sanad, an older, more experienced character among the new generation of traders.
In his role, he stays true to his name – Sanad, which means support – as he helps guide Shihab through his many challenges and adventures.
Al Feeli spoke about the growth of the Emirati TV and drama scene.
"The competition in the industry is fierce, especially with Abu Dhabi Media Network's growing presence. They've become a major player in the field with a distinctive mark on Emirati drama," he said. "Their investment in emerging local talent is also commendable."
According to Al Feeli, this is evidenced in "Al Boom", which brings in a fresh, young cast working side by side with established local and global names.
Al Mulla shared a similar sentiment, noting that Abu Dhabi Media Network has provided tremendous support to help elevate Emirati drama.
"We have the talent, energy and resources to compete on a global scale. Abu Dhabi Media Network is providing the platform for us to showcase our potential, and I hope more people will start to recognise the value and potential of local productions," he said.
