SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)

Established in 2016 by the Emirati Thabet Al Qaissieh, Al Sadeem Observatory is dedicated to making astronomy accessible to a wide audience.

Located in Al Wathba South, Abu Dhabi, the observatory is committed to research, education, as well as public outreach through its tours.

The observatory's winter programmes highlight some of the most prominent celestial events visible in the UAE’s skies.

According to Al Sadeem: "Winter skies in the UAE showcase some of the most prominent celestial objects and constellations. At Al Sadeem, we highlight the Orion constellation, often called the 'Hunter,' which dominates the winter sky with its bright stars such as Betelgeuse and Rigel. Pleiades, known as the Seven Sisters, is a breathtaking star cluster that carries historical significance, especially in guiding navigation and marking the seasons."

These celestial events are woven into the fabric of Emirati cultural traditions, with Al Sadeem’s programmes connecting them to the Al Duroor calendar.

"Our programmes connect these celestial events to the Al Duroor calendar, an Emirati system that divides the year into 36 seasonal periods based on astronomical and environmental changes. Winter skies align with periods noted for their clarity and beauty, offering unique opportunities for observation," the observatory said.

The Observatory offers tours that connect visitors to the cosmos through guided sessions, astrophotography workshops, and interactive exhibits, blending scientific exploration with cultural narratives to make astronomy accessible to all.

As for what makes the winter sky special in the UAE, the observatory explains: "The UAE’s winter skies are a stargazer’s dream. While many countries face overcast weather, the UAE enjoys crystal-clear starry nights, providing an unmatched view of celestial wonders. Winter here feels like an open invitation to explore the heavens, offering extended visibility of the Milky Way, constellations, and deep-sky objects. The cooler, drier air enhances clarity, making winter a truly special season for both observation and research."

The observatory promotes optimal weather conditions and research opportunities, integrating public engagement to enhance visitors' appreciation of the night sky and scientific understanding.

"The cooler temperatures and longer nights of winter create ideal conditions for stargazing and research at Al Sadeem. The pristine skies of Al Wathba allow us to study phenomena like nebulae, supernova remnants, and galaxies while also hosting public events under optimal conditions," the observatory said.

Al Sadeem further highlighted the cultural and astronomical significance of Canopus (Suhail), reflecting its deep connection to Emirati tradition and the rhythms of life in the UAE.
