RAIED SHUQUM (ABU DHABI)

The enchanting world of Stick Man is set to come alive at the Theatre by ERTH, ERTH Hotel on October 11 and 12.

This family-friendly show, adapted from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s children’s book series, promises a magical experience for audiences of all ages.

Brought to life by Freckle Productions, this award-winning adaptation features talented actors who use puppetry, live music, and engaging storytelling to narrate Stick Man’s adventurous journey.

From a playful dog to a swan building a nest, Stick Man’s misadventures are both humorous and heartwarming, making it a perfect outing for families.

Donaldson is a renowned English writer and playwright, best known for her captivating rhyming stories for children.

She initially wrote songs for children’s television before transitioning to books.

Her first book, “A Squash and a Squeeze,” was published in 1993, illustrated by Axel Scheffler.

This collaboration led to the creation of many other beloved books, including “The Gruffalo,” “Room on the Broom,” and “Stick Man.”

Donaldson’s works are celebrated for their engaging narratives and rhythmic text, making them favourites among young readers and parents alike.

She served as the Children’s Laureate from 2011 to 2013 and has received numerous awards for her contributions to children’s literature.

Scheffler is an acclaimed illustrator known for his distinctive, whimsical style.

The German moved to the UK in 1982 to study Visual Communications at the Bath Academy of Art.

Scheffler’s partnership with Julia Donaldson began with “A Squash and a Squeeze” and has since produced many iconic children’s books.

Scheffler’s illustrations are characterised by their vibrant colours and expressive characters, bringing stories to life in a way that captivates both children and adults.

His work has been translated into numerous languages and has won several awards, solidifying his place as a leading figure in children’s book illustration.

The heartwarming story follows the adventures of Stick Man, who lives in the family tree with his Stick Lady Love and their three stick children.

The first book in the series was first published in 2008.

Stick Man’s life takes an unexpected turn when he is picked up by a playful dog who mistakes him for an ordinary stick.

This marks the beginning of a series of misadventures as Stick Man is carried farther and farther away from his home.

He encounters various challenges, including being used as a flagpole, a sword, and even kindling for a fire.

Throughout his journey, Stick Man remains determined to return to his family tree in time for Christmas.

The book explores themes of family, courage, and perseverance.

Its rhythmic text and engaging illustrations make it a perfect read-aloud story for young children.

The narrative also takes readers through different seasons, adding a dynamic and visually appealing element to the story.

Stick Man was also adapted into a popular animated film featuring voices from Martin Freeman, Jennifer Saunders, and Hugh Bonneville.

The film was well-received and adds another dimension to the beloved story.

Stick Man Live on Stage has delighted audiences in the UAE multiple times, bringing the story to life through engaging performances at the Meyana Theatre, Dubai in October 2019 and at the Dubai Opera in December 2020.

The show has received rave reviews for its creativity and charm, with critics praising its ability to captivate young audiences and adults alike.

“Wonderfully exuberant and imaginative!” hailed Time Out, while the Independent described it as “a clever compelling treat.”
