From a Zayed University graduate to an internationally acclaimed multidisciplinary artist, Latifa Saeed's journey shines a light on the dynamic role of Emirati women in the global art landscape and the continued evolution of the UAE's cultural scene.
The Dubai-based artist graduated from Zayed University with a Bachelor's Degree in Arts and Sciences in 2007. Her career took a significant leap in 2019 when she was awarded the Emerging Artist Fellowship by the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation in collaboration with the Rhode Island School of Design.
In 2021, Saeed continued to gain recognition with a grant from the Misk Art Institute in Riyadh and participated in the group show "Under Construction" at The Prince Faisal bin Fahd Fine Arts Hall. Her work also earned her a place as a finalist in the Richard Mille Art Prize at Louvre Abu Dhabi's "Art Here", where she was featured in the group show "Memory, Time, Territory".
Saeed recently made history as the first Emirati artist to showcase her work in Almaty, Kazakhstan, with a solo exhibition "Black Silhouette" curated by the renowned art historian, critic, and author, Valeria Ibraeva.
In a recent interview with Aletihad, the Abu Dhabi Art's Beyond Emerging Artist described her journey in the arts world as one of continuous exploration and discovery.
"The pursuit of artistic expression encompasses the ultimate journey, as it involves a revelation. I strive to uncover the depths of foundational knowledge, rooted in observable truths and verifiable data. On the other hand, imagination allows us to transcend the boundaries of what is known, envisioning possibilities, and exploring uncharted territories," Saeed reflected.
"The merging of reality and imagination enables us to bridge the gap between what is and what could be. It fuels discoveries, inspiring researchers, artists and scientists to ask new questions, connect seemingly unrelated concepts, and envision groundbreaking solutions. In art, it allows creators to craft captivating stories, envision the future, and potentially create an impact."
Evolution of the UAE Art Scene
Saeed noted the significant evolution of the UAE's art scene over the past decade through the support of its wise leadership. "The UAE is at the forefront of a transformative artistic renaissance in the region, particularly with the development of the Saadiyat Cultural District-a new global destination. This district, home to several new museums, serves as a global catalyst and beacon of hope and inspiration. It exemplifies the UAE's rich cultural heritage, fostering cross-cultural understanding, appreciation, and collaboration."
"This platform is a powerful engine for education and opportunity, creating a universal language that is accessible to all," she added.
To Aspiring Emirati Women Artists
Every year on August 28, the UAE commemorates Emirati Women's Day, a national occasion to celebrate the remarkable achievements and contributions of Emirati women, and their key role in shaping the future of the country. As the day approaches, Saeed offers words of encouragement to aspiring Emirati female artists.
"Art is a matter of survival, Art is how our civilisation will be remembered, and how our futures will be imaged and built. Art is the bridge we build today that will connect our past with our future."
Saeed's work is deeply influenced by her Emirati heritage and culture, which helped her comprehend the universal nature of art. "Art endures as a living testament, preserving the stories, ideas, and wisdom of a people. It transcends borders and time, providing a window into the collective human experience, fostering understanding, empathy, and connection across generations and cultures," she said.
