LAMEES OBEIDAT (ABU DHABI)

As the radiant spirit of Eid Al Fitr envelops Abu Dhabi, one cherished tradition took centre stage on Wednesday and Thursday at Qasr Al Hosn, captivating audiences with its graceful movements, rhythmic melodies, and vibrant energy.

The Al Ayyala performance, deeply entrenched in Emirati culture, delighted residents and visitors alike with its mesmerising blend of poetry, music, and dance against the majestic backdrop of Qasr Al Hosn, the oldest standing structure in Abu Dhabi and the nation's living memorial and the narrator of the city's history.

Witnessing the spectacle, Sultan Al Humairi, an Emirati resident of Abu Dhabi, reminisced about his own days as an Al Ayyala dancer, expressing his joy in preserving this vital cultural heritage.

"Abu Dhabi's Eid celebrations have been truly delightful, and Qasr Al Hosn provides the perfect setting for the Al Ayyala dance," he remarked.

Mubarak Al Otaibah, the Al Ayyala band manager, expressed his pleasure in celebrating Eid Al Fitr by showcasing the beauty of Emirati traditions to residents and visitors alike.

"Al-Ayyala is more than just a performance," Al Otaibah explained to Aletihad.

"It embodies the spirit of strength, chivalry, and unity through its enthusiastic songs and authentic poetry."

In between the rows of performers facing each other and moving in union holding bamboo sticks symbolising swords, a band consisting of brass instruments played the rhythmic beats of the drums and tambourines.

Meanwhile, young girls dressed in traditional dresses stood at the forefront, swaying to the rhythm with their hair cascading gracefully.

For European tourist Erik Jensen, experiencing the Al Ayyala performance for the first time was a revelation.

"I am in awe of the rich Emirati culture showcased here at Qasr Al Hosn," he exclaimed.

"The melodies are enchanting, and the hospitality of the UAE is truly remarkable. Luqaimat has become my favourite treat!"
