SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)

In 2024, the UAE achieved a series of milestones, further solidifying its position as a global leader in space exploration and innovation.

The UAE made remarkable strides in lunar exploration, satellite tech, and space policy,  which marked a turning point in its ambitious journey to become a leader in space advancements.

Lunar Gateway Project

One of the most notable milestones for the UAE in 2024 was its active participation in the Lunar Gateway project, an international collaboration involving the US, Japan, Canada, and the European Union.

The UAE committed to developing the Crew and Science Airlock module for the Lunar Gateway.

This partnership lays emphasis upon the UAE's growing role in deep-space exploration and its dedication to contributing to humanity's return to the Moon after over 50 years.

The first elements of the Gateway are set to launch by 2025, with the Emirates Airlock expected to be launched by 2030.

Emirates Lunar Mission

In addition to its contributions to the Lunar Gateway, the UAE also advanced its Emirates Lunar Mission (ELM) in 2024.

As part of this mission, the UAE launched the Rashid Rover, marking a remarkable achievement as the first Arab mission to explore the lunar surface.

The Rashid Rover aims to gather data on the Moon's surface, centring on its thermal properties and the composition of lunar soil.

Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt

The UAE also made noticeable progress in its Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt (EMA) in 2024.

The mission, which focuses on exploring the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, successfully completed its initial mission design review.

It is set to launch in 2028, and aims to study seven asteroids to uncover new insights into the formation of the solar system and the origins of Earth.

Satellite Technology

Also in the realm of satellite technology, the UAE has made substantial advancements  throughout 2024.

A key highlight is  MBZ-SAT, the second Emirati satellite to be fully developed and built by a team of Emirati engineers after the KhalifaSat.

MBZ-SAT is designed to deliver advanced data services, supporting sectors such as agriculture, urban planning, disaster response, and environmental monitoring.

Furthermore, Yahsat, a UAE-based satellite operator, made progress by signing a contract with SpaceX to launch two new geostationary satellites, AY4 and AY5.

Space Policy and International Cooperation

In the field of space policy and international cooperation, the UAE made significant strides towards ensuring sustainable growth with the sector.

The UAE government established the Supreme Space Council, tasked with overseeing national space policies, priorities, and strategic initiatives.

The Abu Dhabi Space Debate (ADSD), held in December 2024, was another major highlight of the year, bringing together leaders and decision-makers from around the world to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the space sector.

In 2024, the UAE laid a strong foundation for its space future, as evidenced by the UAE Space Agency's 10th anniversary.

This milestone, along with the ongoing efforts of other UAE space institutions, spotlights the nation's success in space missions and global partnerships, reinforcing its leadership in exploration.

Alongside the Mars Science City, the Mars 2117 vision is on track, focusing on energy, water, and food security to pave the way for future Martian habitats.
