The Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate impounded 1,596 vehicles over a 10-month period in 2026 for making unauthorised modifications to vehicle engines or chassis and causing excessive noise.

The violations were found to be in breach of traffic rules and regulations and caused disturbance to residents and other road users, a statement issued on Friday said.

The Directorate explained that illegally modifying vehicles, including alterations that increase engine or exhaust noise, are violations that warrant legal action against those responsible.

It stressed that noise resulting from such practices disturbs residential neighbourhoods and affects residents' comfort and quality of life across the city.

The Directorate urged vehicle owners to comply with approved technical specifications and avoid illegal modifications, adding that inspection and monitoring efforts will continue to curb such violations and enhance road safety.

Under Article 20 of the Traffic and Road Safety Law, driving a vehicle that causes excessive noise is punishable with a Dh2,000 fine and 12 traffic points.

Meanwhile, Article 73, which covers unauthorised modifications to a vehicle’s engine or chassis, carries a Dh1,000 fine, 12 traffic points, and a 30-day vehicle impoundment.
