ILT20 Season 5 auction sees four players breach $260,000 record

The DP World International League T20 Season 5 player auction saw four players surpass the previous record of $260,000, with Afghanistan fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi becoming the most expensive player after MI Emirates secured him for $380,000.

England all-rounder Liam Livingstone was the second-highest purchase at $350,000 for Gulf Giants, while Rahmanullah Gurbaz joined the Giants for $310,000 through their Right-to-Match (RTM) option. Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis completed the top four after being signed by Dubai Capitals for $300,000.

The six franchises also invested heavily in UAE players. Muhammad Waseem became the highest-priced UAE player in ILT20 history when MI Emirates used their RTM option to retain him for $210,000.

Alishan Sharafu was the next-highest UAE player at $110,000 with Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, followed by Muhammad Rohid at $95,000 with the Knight Riders and Aayan Khan at $95,000 with Dubai Capitals.

Abu Dhabi Knight Riders' other notable purchases included USA's Amshi De Silva for $100,000, England all-rounder Moeen Ali and Afghanistan's Arab Gul for $80,000 each, and Gulbadin Naib for $75,000. Saudi Arabia's Abdul Mannan Ali and Kuwait's Ravija Sandaruwan were signed for $10,000 each.

The defending champions Desert Vipers retained David Payne for $150,000 through RTM. Pakistan stars Babar Azam, Naseem Shah, Shadab Khan and Fakhar Zaman were all secured for their $80,000 base price. Babar will make his ILT20 debut in Season 5, while Naseem and Fakhar return to the champions. UAE wicketkeeper-batter Vriitya Aravind was signed for $70,000, while Khuzaima Bin Tanveer was retained through RTM for $75,000.

Dubai Capitals' $300,000 signing of Faf du Plessis was followed by Max Holden and Dasun Shanaka at $100,000 each. UAE all-rounder Aayan Khan was bought for $95,000 and USA all-rounder Hassan Khan for $90,000, while England opener Phil Salt joined for his $80,000 base price.

Gulf Giants made Livingstone their biggest purchase at $350,000 and used RTM to bring back Gurbaz for $310,000. West Indies fast bowlers Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph joined for $230,000 and $80,000 respectively, while Namibia's David Wiese was signed for $70,000 and Afghanistan's Ibrahim Zadran for $65,000.

MI Emirates, who spent a total of $2m at the auction, also brought in Chris Jordan for $170,000 and Afghanistan spinner Allah Ghazanfar for $150,000 through RTM. South Africa's Lizaad Williams cost $110,000, while England's James Coles was signed for $100,000.

Sharjah Warriorz strengthened their squad with England's Richard Gleeson for $180,000, Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi for $140,000 and England's Paul Walter for $110,000. Adil Rashid, Tom Banton and Craig Overton were each signed for $80,000, while Scotland's Brandon McMullen also fetched $80,000.

Among Associate Member nations, USA's Amshi De Silva and Hassan Khan were signed for $100,000 and $90,000 respectively. Scotland's McMullen went to the Warriorz for $80,000, while Namibia's David Wiese joined the Giants for $70,000.

The six franchises' auction spending was led by MI Emirates at $2 million, followed by Gulf Giants at $1.972m, Dubai Capitals at $1.834m, Sharjah Warriorz at $1.792m, Abu Dhabi Knight Riders at $1.549m and Desert Vipers at $1.544m.
