Abu Dhabi’s focus on developing an environment that promotes active living through community programmes, accessible sports facilities and urban planning was in the spotlight at the inaugural Liveability and Investment Exhibition (LIVEX 2026).
During a session titled "Built to Move: How Abu Dhabi Designs for an Active Life" at LIVEX, sports sector leaders discussed ways to encourage residents of all ages and backgrounds to adopt healthier, more active lifestyles.
The discussion explored how neighborhood design, access to recreational areas, and the delivery of sports programmes can impact people's daily habits. It also emphasised the importance of collaboration between legislators, sports organisations and facility operators in buidling an active community.
Aref Al Awani, Secretary-General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, the emirate benefits from well-developed infrastructure that supports and encourages an active lifestyle, highlighting the role of urban design in making physical activity more accessible.
Al Awani cited the infrastructure upgrades implemented across the United Arab Emirates to promote mobility and leisure. "It's the way Abu Dhabi is built," he said.
He also emphasised the significance of creating communities that naturally inspire people to engage in physical activity and sports.
The conversation also looked at how sports executives can help shape communities and ensure that facilities are supported by initiatives that encourage sustained involvement rather than simply providing access to facilities.
Fouad Darwish, CEO of Palm Sports, emphasised the significance of understanding the factors that encourage regular use of sports facilities. He stressed the role of data, research and long-term planning in developing successful community sports programmes.
Darwish also emphasized the growing emphasis placed on sports development in the UAE in recent years. "First of all, I would like to honour the notion of sports and the development of sports in our country, and particularly in our city."
He said that while the country has made significant progress in expanding its sports infrastructure, data and measurable indicators remain essential to understanding participation patterns and identifying ways to encourage more people to maintain active lifestyles.
The session concluded by highlighting the importance of developing a consistent, long-term sports strategy that is in line with the UAE's future goals.
