Pets are becoming an increasingly important part of daily life for many people in Abu Dhabi, providing companionship, routine and a strong emotional connection.

For some pet owners, caring for an animal has become more than a responsibility, offering comfort and a sense of purpose in their everyday lives.

Kawthar Al Ali, who owns a dog, said that owning a pet has altered her daily schedule by making her feel more responsible and motivating her to spend time taking care of her dog.

"Having my dog has made my day more enjoyable. I constantly make sure I have time to play with him, take care of him, and pay attention to him. It's become a unique aspect of my daily existence," she said.

Living with multiple pets has made Mohammed Obaid's home vibrant and fostered a strong feeling of community. He has four dogs and three cats.

“There's always something going on at home when you have seven pets. Spending time with them allows me to detach from the stresses of the day because they all have unique personalities. Seeing the connection that has grown between us over time is the most significant aspect,” he said.

Pets can offer routine, emotional connection and company, which may lessen feelings of loneliness, according to Dr Amir Javaid, Consultant Psychiatry at Burjeel Medical City. He noted that interacting with pets may be consoling during stressful times and that taking care of an animal can help foster a feeling of purpose and responsibility.

However, the effect varies from person to person and should not be considered a substitute for professional mental-health support when it is needed, he added.

When asked why some people develop such strong emotional bonds with their pets, often viewing them as family members, Dr Javaid said pets frequently provide consistent companionship without the social pressures that can accompany human relationships.

“People may feel attachment, trust and emotional safety by caring for and interacting with an animal. Daily rituals like feeding, playing and spending time together can further strengthen this attachment.

“For people who live alone or have limited social support, a pet may become an important source of connection and belonging, which is why many naturally regard their pets as family members.” Interaction with pets can be a useful source of everyday emotional support.

“The benefit depends on several factors, including the individual's relationship with the animal, the pet’s type and temperament, the person's lifestyle and whether caring for the pet feels manageable rather than burdensome.

“Ultimately, the relationship is most beneficial when it brings companionship and comfort without creating significant additional responsibilities or stress.”
