SEHA, a subsidiary of PureHealth, the largest healthcare group in the Middle East, has reported the successful management and recovery of a teenager at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) after a serious traumatic brain injury (TBI).

The case underscores SKMC’s commitment to patient-centred, compassionate care for patients and their families, and highlights the expertise of the hospital's neurosurgeons, who are supported by intensive care providers trained in managing TBI patients.

The young patient sustained a serious head injury after he fell from his bike. An initial CT brain scan revealed post-traumatic right subarachnoid and subdural haemorrhage. Due to elevated intracranial pressure and the severity of his condition, he was intubated, and sedated.

The following day, the patient underwent a right fronto-temporoparietal decompressive craniectomy to relieve pressure on the brain. Given the severity of his condition and the associated complications, including a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak and accompanying infections, his case required close monitoring and comprehensive medical management.

The patient had to undergo a tracheostomy to receive breathing support, followed by a lumbar drain for his CSF leak. Later, the medical staff performed a cranioplasty for the reconstruction of the skull.

The patient recovered well neurologically following the various procedures. His Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score has improved to 11/15, reflecting a notable level of consciousness. he has now become communicative and is ready to begin rehabilitation.

Dr Musaab Ali Al Ramsi, Chairman, Department of Critical Care Medicine at SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, commented: "Treating severe traumatic brain injuries requires a multidisciplinary approach and specialised care. We are pleased with the progress made by our team in managing this complex case, and we remain committed to supporting the patient's continued recovery and rehabilitation."

The case highlights SEHA SKMC's success in providing comprehensive management of critical neurological cases, from emergency intervention and surgical excellence to a plan for ongoing rehabilitation. SKMC combines the latest medical technologies with caring, patient-centred care to achieve the best possible outcome when caring for patients with life-threatening neurological illnesses.
