AMEINAH ALZEYOUDI (ABU DHABI)

Ahmed Hassan Al Shehhi, an Emirati pilot, skydiver, and adventurer, had bigger plans for the Proud of UAE campaign than just making a spectacular show. He aimed to turn a patriotic idea into an achievement that would showcase the country's spirit and resilience to the world.

That vision became a reality when Al Shehhi and Yahya Saeed Lootah secured the Guinness World Records title for the largest banner ever lifted from a pole by a vehicle by raising a UAE flag-shaped banner measuring a huge 429.977 square metres in Dubai.

For Al Shehhi, the record is about much more than just numbers.

"I have always been passionate about pushing boundaries and turning ambitious ideas into reality. What motivates me is the conviction that, with perseverance, preparation, and teamwork, it is always possible to accomplish something that has never been done before," Al Shehhi said.

He said that the record stands for commitment, tenacity, and a chance to fly the UAE flag to motivate people.

"I am really proud of being able to contribute to my country's image on a global stage," he said.

The project was inspired by the Proud of UAE campaign, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The campaign called on citizens and residents to raise the UAE flag on homes and buildings as a symbol unity, national identity, and shared responsibility, reinforcing the flag's role as a unifying symbol across society.

His Highness has often said that the UAE should aim to be among the greatest countries in the world, he said.

"With that mindset, I wanted to create something that reflected my pride in the UAE and showcased the ambition that defines our nation," he said.

He said that breaking a record was never the goal. Rather, it was about showcasing what can be accomplished through dedication and excellence while conveying a message of pride in the country, inventiveness, and resolve.

It required months of planning, testing, and cooperation to make the ambitious idea a reality. To guarantee safety and success, every facet of the project, from the engineering of the flag system to the vehicle set-up and execution strategy, was thoroughly examined and improved.

Al Shehhi oversaw the project's conception and general planning, although Lootah was crucial to its development and assistance during its implementation.  Lootah provided the car used for the record attempt, and his assistance was crucial in making the idea a reality.

Additionally, the crew received a great deal of assistance from Skydive Dubai, which gave them access to its facilities and runway, allowing the attempt to be completed in a professional setting.

Al Shehhi also thanked His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, for his encouragement, pointing out that young people are still motivated to strive for greatness and think beyond the box by the support given to bold Emirati ventures.

Al Shehhi maintains that online fame was never the intention, despite the project's eye-catching images and extensive social media coverage.

"Our goal was to successfully set the record and create a meaningful tribute to the UAE," he said.

"We were thrilled to see people from all over the world connect with it and celebrate the achievement, even though we knew the visual impact would be unique."

Al Shehhi is already planning for the future after securing the world record. He characterises the accomplishment as another turning point in an ongoing voyage of creativity and exploration rather than as a finish line.

"I am constantly investigating new concepts that integrate innovation, aviation, technology, and patriotism," he stated.

"My goal is to keep creating projects that uplift people, positively represent the United Arab Emirates on the international scene, and demonstrate that even the most ambitious ideas can come to pass."

His message to the younger generation of Emiratis is clear: Dream big.

"Innovation, creativity, and ambition are encouraged in the United Arab Emirates," he added. "Every great achievement begins as an idea, but hard work, perseverance, and self-belief make it a reality."

He believes that one of the country's greatest strengths is its commitment to empowering youth and creating opportunities for them to innovate and succeed.

"Do not be afraid to take on challenges," he said.

"Every challenge is an opportunity to learn, grow, and make a positive impact. The future of the UAE will be shaped by the ambitions and achievements of its youth."
