SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)

The National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) spotlights its work in prevention, treatment and rehabilitation on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed annually on June 26, reinforcing a message of hope, support and recovery.

The NRC has launched a nationwide awareness campaign to mark the occasion under the theme "Supportive Family… Safe Community".

The campaign aims to strengthen the role of families in preventing substance abuse, raise awareness of the risks of addiction, encourage people to seek treatment without stigma, and support rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society.

In an interview with Aletihad on the occasion, Yousef Altheeb Alketbi, Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, highlighted the centre's achievements, future priorities and efforts to strengthen addiction prevention and recovery across the UAE.

Alketbi said that one of the NRC's most significant achievements last year was attaining a three-year accreditation from CARF International, a globally recognised independent accreditor of health and human services.

"It's a recognition that reflects our commitment to delivering high-quality addiction treatment and rehabilitation services in accordance with internationally recognised standards and best practices," Alketbi said.

He added that the centre has also expanded regional and international cooperation through its role as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Substance Use Prevention and Treatment.

The centre also strengthens outreach programmes with families, schools and community partners to promote early intervention, reduce stigma, and enhance public understanding of substance use disorders and recovery.

Discussing new initiatives, Alketbi said this year's awareness campaign, "Supportive Family... Safe Community", aligns with the UAE's Year of Family 2026 and highlights the central role families play in prevention and recovery.

He said the initiative includes awareness activities, community events, educational programmes and expert consultations across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra Region, while also addressing emerging risks in digital environments.

Alketbi said the Centre remains committed to strengthening prevention efforts as substance abuse risks continue to evolve, particularly in digital environments, while raising awareness, encouraging early help-seeking and improving access to support services.

"Through these efforts, we aim to foster a more informed, resilient, and supportive society that is better equipped to prevent substance use and promote long-term health and wellbeing."

Evidence-based Practice
Alketbi stressed that evidence-based practice remains at the heart of the NRC's work.

He noted the centre continuously updates its programmes in line with the latest scientific evidence and international best practices, supported by advanced diagnostic and laboratory capabilities to enhance assessment and personalised treatment.

"Our specialised clinical services are supported by advanced diagnostic and laboratory capabilities, including our Clinical Toxicology Laboratory, which plays a vital role in supporting accurate assessment, clinical decision-making, and personalised treatment planning," he said.

When it comes to prevention, Alketbi described families as the first line of defence against substance abuse.

"Families play a vital role in prevention and early intervention. They are often the first source of guidance, support and positive influence in a young person's life."

He said the NRC continues to work closely with families, schools and community organisations through awareness campaigns and educational programmes, while encouraging open conversations that reduce stigma and help people seek treatment earlier.

This year's campaign theme, "Supportive Family... Safe Community", thus "reflects our belief that strong families are the foundation of healthy communities and play a critical role not only in prevention, but also in supporting individuals throughout their recovery journey", he said.

Furthermore, Alketbi said the NRC will continue investing in research, innovation, clinical expertise and workforce development while evolving its services to meet the changing needs of individuals, families and communities.

"A key priority for the NRC is to further strengthen its position as a centre of excellence in addiction prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery. We will continue to enhance clinical expertise, invest in workforce development, support research and innovation, and contribute to knowledge exchange at the national, regional and international levels," he noted.

Marking the occasion, Alketbi stressed that addressing substance use requires a shared commitment from families, communities and institutions.

"On the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, we are reminded that behind every substance use challenge is a person, a family, and a future that deserves hope, support and opportunity," he stressed.

"Our message is clear: recovery is possible, help is available, and no one should face these challenges alone. With the right support, individuals can rebuild their lives, restore their potential, and move forward with confidence, dignity and hope."
