SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)

Fifteen long-running businesses that have left their mark on the capital's communities were honoured in the fifth edition of Urban Treasures, an initiative of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi).

Cafeterias that have become go-to spots of many residents. Tailors who became extended family for their long-time customers. Shops that have stood the test of time.

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, described them as "places that have served as anchors within communities", becoming part of everyday life across generations.

During a ceremony held at the Cultural Foundation, Al Mubarak presented the awards to the 15 local gems:  Al Amal Medical Centre; Shahbaz Traders; Miss J Café; Restaurant Dubai Special Kabab Grills LLC; Kanaan Gents Saloon LLC; Zubaid Tailoring &  Embroidery Exhibition; Ghandoor Cafeteria and Pastry; Al Bahri Dental & Orthodontic Center; Cafeteria Hussam; Abid Trading Stores; Syria Cafeteria; Al Qusoor Tailoring & Garments; Sea Shell Refreshments; ADCOOP; and Top Man Gents Garments.

With this year's edition, a total of 75 businesses across Abu Dhabi have now been recognised through the initiative, each celebrated for their contribution to the emirate's social and cultural fabric.

"Abu Dhabi is home to countless longstanding institutions that continue to serve people from all walks of life," Al Mubarak said. "These establishments embody the entrepreneurial drive and sense of belonging that have long driven the emirate forward. We will continue to honour the enterprises that have made a lasting impact - and today, we celebrate those recognised in this year's edition."

The Urban Treasures initiative was launched to recognise the city's landmark homegrown businesses - among them restaurants, bakeries, tailors, fabric stores, perfumeries, jewellers, pharmacies, and photography studios - that have thrived in Abu Dhabi for 20 years or more.

The award aligns with DCT Abu Dhabi's Modern Heritage Initiative, which celebrates and safeguards the emirate's more recent past.

This year's winners were selected through public nominations and assessed on criteria including community value, urban history, placemaking, and authenticity.
