The United Arab Emirates has condemned Iran's attacks on civilian infrastructure and threatening maritime security, during a high-level debate at the United Nations Security Council on strengthening the UN-centered international system.

Speaking at the open debate convened by China on Thursday, UAE Permanent Representative to the UN, His Excellency Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab, said the UN Charter remains “the primary shield against global disorder” and stressed the importance of multilateral cooperation, dialogue and de-escalation.

Abushahab highlighted that Iran had, over the past three months, launched “unlawful and unprovoked attacks” targeting UAE civilian infrastructure, including ports, airports, energy facilities and communications networks.

He added Tehran of obstructing the Strait of Hormuz, describing the move as a violation of international law that threatens global maritime security and the world economy.

"It is our firm belief that long-term stability and prosperity cannot be built under conditions of permanent confrontation or ideological extremism, but rather through dialogue and de-escalation," Abushahab noted.

"Yet, for too long, one State in our region has exploited its neighbors’ goodwill by continuing its destabilising behavior, including its sponsorship of armed proxies."

The ambassador further said a recent drone attack launched from Iraqi territory had targeted the UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, calling it a “flagrant violation of international law.” He noted that the Security Council had condemned the attack earlier this week.

Reaffirming the UAE’s right to defend its territory and population under international law, Abushahab urged the Security Council to take stronger action against attacks on civilian infrastructure and to hold states accountable for acts carried out through proxy groups.

He also called for the full implementation of Security Council resolutions, warning that failure to enforce them undermines the credibility and authority of the international system.

“The UAE remains committed to a future based on stability and shared prosperity,” Abushahab said, adding that lasting peace cannot coexist with impunity.
