ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)
The UAE Council for Fatwa has announced that it will convene a moonsighting committee on the evening of Sunday, May 17 to search for the crescent moon marking the beginning of the month of Dhul-Hijjah.
May 17 corresponds to 29 Dhul-Qa’dah on the Islamic calendar. The month of Dhul-Qa’dah precedes the month of Dhul-Hijjah, with 9 Dhul-Hijjah marked as the Day of Arafah and 10 Dhul-Hijjah celebrated as the first day of Eid Al Adha.
The moonsighting will be undertaken in coordination and cooperation with observatories and national centres across the UAE:
-Al Khatim Observatory, in cooperation with the International Astronomical Centre
-Dubai Observatory, in cooperation with the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department
-Sharjah Observatory, in cooperation with the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences and Technology
The moonsighting will be conducted using the latest modern technologies and advanced techniques, the council said.
