DUBAI (ALETIHAD)
Dubai Police has urged motorists to reduce speed and give pedestrians priority when crossing roads, stressing that drivers must always allow pedestrians to cross safely, even in designated crossing areas.
The warning follows a serious collision involving a bicycle and a vehicle in Al Yalayis 1 area, Mira Community, which left a girl with severe injuries.
Brigadier Jumaa bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, said pedestrian safety remains one of Dubai Police’s strategic priorities. He called on drivers to remain alert to pedestrian movement across various roads, especially near pedestrian crossing areas, industrial zones, and residential neighbourhoods.
He explained that motorists who fail to give pedestrians priority at designated crossing areas face a fine of Dh500 and six black points under Article 69 of the Federal Traffic Law.
According to Dubai Police, the collision occurred after the driver failed to give priority to the pedestrian crossing area, leading to the impact and the girl sustaining serious injuries.
She was immediately transferred to hospital to receive the necessary treatment.
Brigadier Bin Suwaidan added that traffic accident experts attended the scene to inspect the site and gather evidence to determine the causes of the collision, while traffic patrols secured the area, regulated traffic movement, and facilitated the arrival of emergency and rescue teams.
He further stressed the importance of exercising maximum caution while driving, particularly in residential areas and near pedestrian crossings, highlighting the need to reduce speed, remain attentive to the road, and avoid distractions while driving to protect lives and prevent tragic accidents.
